Perhaps you remember. Perhaps you do not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bruce Nolan, a fed-up reporter, cries out to God, demonstrably sharing that God isn\u2019t<\/strong> doing his job; in fact, if God is<\/em><\/strong> somehow doing it, he certainly isn\u2019t doing a very good job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hence, the One and Only Divine decides to bestow all such powers onto this one man. He graciously lets Bruce take a turn. Hence, come the following poignant (and often witty) <\/em>interactions \u2014 including Bruce, his girlfriend Grace, and the great big God of the universe\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cYou have the ability to make people laugh. I know. I created you.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cYou can\u2019t kneel in the middle of the highway and live to tell the tale.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n BRUCE: \u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cVacation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n BRUCE: \u201cGod doesn\u2019t go on vacation. Does He? \u2026do Ye?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cEver hear of the Dark Ages?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cParting soup is not a miracle, Bruce\u2026 Now a single mom who works two full-time jobs and still finds time to pick up her kid at soccer practice, that\u2019s a miracle. A teenager that says \u2018no\u2019 to drugs and \u2018yes\u2019 to education, that\u2019s a miracle. You want to see a miracle, son? Be the miracle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n BRUCE: \u201cFeed the hungry, and give peace on all mankind. Is that good?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cYes, if you\u2019re Miss America.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n But perhaps my favorite quote \u2014 and one that speaks volumes to the rest of us \u2014 comes near the movie\u2019s climax, after Bruce finds abundant success and is humbled and awed by both compassionate and ostentatious uses of power \u2014 but remains deeply torn up by the conflict within him; he is unable to change the heart of the one he loves. He can\u2019t<\/strong> make Grace love him\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n BRUCE: \u201cHow can you make someone love you without changing free will?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cWelcome to my world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I find myself sitting with that this week\u2026 a week known \u2018round the world as Holy Week, the week before Easter, celebrated by a few billion<\/em> across all continents, acknowledging the life of Jesus Christ and applying the meaning of his death and resurrection. God doesn\u2019t make<\/em> us love him; he doesn\u2019t make us believe. He provides such timeless freedom. He lets us look around; look at how he\u2019s at work \u2014 look at his marvelous creation. He lets us observe and marvel at all he has done \u2014 in us and through us and in the world and people around us. He then gives us free will, allowing us to actually choose<\/em> to move nearer to him. And when we are nearer\u2026 wow\u2026 the peace, love\u2026 the hope and the confidence\u2026 available amidst this so often baffling, bitter, and challenging world\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n _____<\/p>\n\n\n\n GOD: \u201cGrace. You want her back?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n BRUCE: \u201cNo. I want her to be happy no matter what that means. I want her to find someone who will treat her with all the love she deserved from me.
