First, some definitions\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n my<\/strong> | m\u012b | possessive determiner<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n 1 <\/strong>belonging to or associated with the speaker: my name is John<\/em> | my friend<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2 <\/strong>used in various expressions of surprise: my goodness!<\/em> | oh my!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n truth<\/strong> | tro\u035eoTH | noun<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n the quality or state of being true: he had to accept the truth of her accusation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 <\/strong>that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality: tell me the truth<\/em> | she found out the truth about him<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 <\/strong>a fact or belief that is accepted as true: the emergence of scientific truths<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So then we observe, listening to what people think, say, and believe \u2014 such as this prominent news host this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy role as a journalist is to speak from my truth and from my lens and from where I come from, and I don\u2019t think those things are biases. I think those things give me expertise in this particular subject.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n With all due respect, he is not alone. Many believe their<\/em> truth is the<\/em><\/strong> truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Herein lies the problem\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n By definition,\u201ctruth\u201d fits \u201cin accordance with fact or reality.\u201d One person\u2019s experience does not equate to everyone else\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u201cmy\u201d modifies what comes after it; \u201cmy\u201d modifies \u201ctruth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if \u201ctruth\u201d is \u201cfact or reality,\u201d it can\u2019t be modified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Which makes me wonder\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n Is one of the challenges of current day this notion that seemingly well-intentioned, even intelligent people believe contradicting themselves makes sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Truth is not relative. Hence, there is no such thing as \u201cmy truth,\u201d your truth, or anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So what if instead of \u201cmy truth,\u201d we acknowledged\u2026 \u201cThis is my experience\u2026\u201d With that comes the prudent awareness that individual perspective and experience do not hold for all people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why is such a distinction important?<\/em><\/strong> Great question.
