{"id":1323,"date":"2013-01-15T05:56:26","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T10:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=1323"},"modified":"2013-01-15T05:56:26","modified_gmt":"2013-01-15T10:56:26","slug":"blessing-in-the-bad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=1323","title":{"rendered":"blessing in the bad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every now and then, the Intramuralist semi-gracefully stumbles upon a truth which is so counter-cultural \u2014 an ideal or behavior that seemingly opposes all prudence.\u00a0 In other words, there exist areas of wisdom that the world completely fails to comprehend&#8230;\u00a0 where society thinks one way&#8230;\u00a0often fairly adamantly&#8230;\u00a0often obliviously&#8230;\u00a0often, unfortunately, at its own peril.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lately, the Intramuralist has been observing society\u2019s reaction toward suffering.\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it; there\u2019s been a lot of \u201cbad stuff\u201d happening&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; people out of work&#8230; government bickering&#8230; Sandy Hook&#8230; Hurricane Sandy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; death&#8230; divorce&#8230; distance between friends&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; not enough money&#8230; not enough time&#8230; sickness&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; sick children&#8230; fighting&#8230; debt&#8230; more debt&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; friends losing houses&#8230; families losing jobs&#8230; neighbors not knowing how to put food on the table each night&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trials and temptations, negative circumstances, scenarios which are simply incredibly difficult to endure.\u00a0 There\u2019s been a lot of \u201cbad stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most of us \u2014 maybe, possibly, most <em>all<\/em> of us \u2014 perceive the \u201cbad stuff\u201d as exactly that: \u00a0 bad.\u00a0 Hence, we work tirelessly to alleviate the \u201cbadness\u201d \u2014 to eradicate any situation in which suffering exists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s only one, glaring glitch embedded within that pursuit.\u00a0 If we eradicate all the \u201cbad,\u201d my sense is that we miss the surprising, bountiful blessing within&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blessed are those who are poor&#8230; who are thus more likely to realize their need for God \u2014 and not allow arrogance to get in the way&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who are grieving&#8230; who are thus more likely to seek out lasting comfort \u2014 and not fall prey to numbing themselves via merely temporary means&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who don\u2019t succeed&#8230; who thus have opportunity to learn to genuinely celebrate the success of another&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those whose best laid plans have completely fallen through&#8230; who are less likely to struggle with their need to dominate or control&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who must sacrifice&#8230; who are then more likely to comprehend what is valuable and what is not&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who cannot care for themselves&#8230; who are thus more likely to appreciate the authenticity of selfless service \u2014 and in turn encourage service in others&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who have tragically lost a loved one&#8230; who are far more likely to long for something more eternal than this planet&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those whose children have disappointed them&#8230; who have intensified opportunity to recognize what\u2019s most important to teach \u2014 and surrender that which is minimal&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who cry&#8230; for they have learned the beauty of empathy&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Blessed are those who have less&#8230; for they are less likely to take life for granted&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Friends, we work to eradicate negative circumstances.\u00a0 And while I would wish such specific circumstances on no one, I am concerned at the bountiful blessings society seems to simply ignore \u2014 that it completely fails to comprehend. \u00a0It\u2019s almost as if in our perceived pursuit of rights, fairness, and entitlement \u2014 each which possesses <em>some<\/em> value \u2014 we forget that there exists blessing in the \u201cbad.\u201d\u00a0 Joy lies ahead even amidst the trial.\u00a0 Hence, if we eradicate what is arduous, if we abolish the \u201cbad\u201d \u2014 no matter how adamantly \u2014 we may also eradicate the blessing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;
