One of the Intramuralist\u2019s key ambitions is to routinely encourage what is good and right and true. But let\u2019s face it. In a society bombarded by seemingly constant moral digression, sometimes what\u2019s good and right and true is difficult to discern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We watch people fight. We watch them denigrate the different and call others names. We watch them refuse to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And those are just the adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My sense is that part of our downfall is we\u2019ve polluted the third pillar in the good, right and true metric; we\u2019re confused by the definition of truth. Our airwaves and even casual conversations are befouled by quotes depicted as \u201cbrainy,\u201d that in actuality speak of truth differently\u2026 I am my truth\u2026 Your truth and my truth may not be the same\u2026 This is my truth; tell me yours\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n All of the above, therefore, prompt us to ask today\u2019s zillion dollar question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Is truth relative?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n To ensure we are aligned, let\u2019s put forth a few definitions\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n truth<\/strong> | tro\u035eoTH | – noun<\/p>\n\n\n\n the quality or state of being true<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n true<\/strong> | tro\u035eo | – adjective<\/p>\n\n\n\n in accordance with fact or reality<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And last but not least\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n rel\u00b7a\u00b7tive<\/strong> | \u02c8rel\u0259div | – adjective<\/p>\n\n\n\n considered in relation or in proportion to something else<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 existing or possessing a specified characteristic only in comparison to something else; not absolute<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n So let\u2019s get this straight\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTruth\u201d or \u201ctrue\u201d means that which is in accordance with fact.<\/em><\/strong> Facts are not debatable nor deniable. They are proven reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRelative\u201d means possession a characteristic only in comparison to something else.<\/em><\/strong> In other words, by definition, it is not fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hence (and clearly, this isn\u2019t rocket science nor actually any kind of science), truth cannot be relative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI am my truth,<\/em>\u201d therefore, instead implies that I am mixing up the words \u201ctruth\u201d with either my \u201cpreference,\u201d \u201copinion\u201d or \u201cdesire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYour truth and my truth may not be the same\u201d\u2026<\/em> Such is also understandable, yet we\u2019re getting lost in a most poetic idea, wherein \u201ctruth\u201d is getting confused with either \u201cperspective\u201d or \u201cexperience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n And as for \u201cThis is my truth; tell me yours\u201d\u2026 <\/em>That\u2019s another good one, but here we\u2019ve misplaced \u201ctruth\u201d on top of \u201cstory\u201d or \u201cconviction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It makes sense that we would each have different preferences, opinions, desires, perspectives, experiences, stories, and convictions. With absolutely all due respect, it does not make sense that there exist different truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Truth be told, if we tell the truth \u2014 the whole truth and nothing but the truth, that is \u2014 truth is not<\/em> relative. It\u2019s can\u2019t be. That\u2019s good. That\u2019s right.
