{"id":2467,"date":"2013-10-31T06:22:09","date_gmt":"2013-10-31T10:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2467"},"modified":"2013-10-31T06:27:48","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T10:27:48","slug":"government-repairs-part-2-of-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2467","title":{"rendered":"government repairs:  part 2 of 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>If the government is <\/i><b><i>not <\/i><\/b><i>irreparably broken, then how can we fix it?\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Priority #1:\u00a0 congressional term limits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Several of you have publicly and privately affirmed the above; the first step to fixing our broken government is to establish term limits for the elect.\u00a0 The length of each term should be debated.\u00a0 Presidents are given a maximum of 8 elected years.\u00a0 I believe a reasonable approach is 12 years for senators \u2014 meaning 2 elected terms \u2014 and 8-12 years for representatives \u2014 meaning 4-6 terms.\u00a0 If 8-12 years is not long enough to complete one\u2019s job, then perhaps one is in the wrong job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for suggested priority #1, I sought conservative, liberal, and independent opinion \u2014 gleaning insights from the Annenberg Public Policy Center, Cato Institute, Heritage Foundation, BalancedPolitics.org, and RestartCongress.org among others.\u00a0 Utilizing several of their articulations, let me offer the following reasons for\u00a0congressional term limits:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Politicians would be less likely to focus on special interests because they cannot stay in office indefinitely.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>If the elect are less focused on special interests, they will also be less likely to become comfortable with \u201cpork barrel\u201d spending.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Being less focused on lobbyists and special interests, chances for corruption will be limited.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>More of a &#8220;citizen&#8221; Congress would be created, as opposed to congressional bodies primarily consisting of lawyers and career politicians.\u00a0 Congress would thus be better in touch with their constituents as opposed to in touch with national party platforms.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i>If better in touch with constituents, the vote of the elect would also more accurately reflect those they represent.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i>The elect will then not be too far removed from their experiences in the private sector; hence, they should more easily comprehend how the private sector is affected by their legislation.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i>Those in their last term of office are more likely to ignore politics and media criticism when considering prudent policy measures.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i>The need for re-election becomes less important \u2014 as then does toeing the party line and holding onto party seats.\u00a0 Too much of that is the current driver behind individual legislative decisions, which complicates passing legislation.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i>Committee assignments would be determined by merit and expertise, rather than tenure, another area that currently wields significant potential for corruption.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The bottom line is that term limits would help restore ample respect for Congress.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One more thing that was eye-opening to me during this research process was the answer to the following question:\u00a0 who typically <i>opposes<\/i> term limits?\u00a0 What people groups seem to be most against the concept \u2014 especially when you look at the substantial, ethical reasons above?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Primarily in opposition to term limits are political scientists, lobbyists and special interests, and the elect themselves.\u00a0 The concern among some political scientists is that amateurs may end up running the government.\u00a0 But the lobbyists?
