they just think about themselves less.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 \u00a0\u2014 Ken Blanchard<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It may be a minority opinion, but to this current events observer, thinking about oneself less is always more attractive \u2014 <b><i>humility<\/i><\/b> is more attractive&#8230; more attractive than boasting, more attractive than ego, more attractive than any criticism or lessening of others.\u00a0 Any among us can swagger and swoon, directing all eyes to <i>\u201clook at me&#8230; look at who I am&#8230; look at what I\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 It seems the rarer, wiser man, however, who knows that the more attractive, influential approach is to be humble, especially when chosen amid the display of distinct ability, accomplishment, influence, or intellect&#8230; especially when the cameras are on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was hard not to notice Richard Sherman\u2019s rant Sunday night after his Seattle Seahawks earned their position in Super Bowl XLVIII.\u00a0 After sealing a Seahawk victory by making a fantastic, late-in-the-game play that denied what could have been the winning touchdown for the opposition, cornerback Sherman was interviewed on the sidelines by FOX reporter, Erin Andrews.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ANDREWS:\u00a0 \u201cRichard, let me ask you.\u00a0 The final play \u2014 take me through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SHERMAN:\u00a0 <i>(loudly)<\/i> \u201cWell, I&#8217;m the best corner in the game!\u00a0 When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that&#8217;s the result you gonna get!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you ever talk about me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ANDREWS:\u00a0 <i>(gently \u2014 geepers \u2014 seemingly working extra hard to maintain her composure on national television)<\/i> &#8220;Who was talking about you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SHERMAN:\u00a0 &#8220;Crabtree!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you open your mouth about the best, or I&#8217;m gonna settle it for you real quick!\u00a0 L.O.B.!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>(Note:\u00a0 \u201cL.O.B.\u201d refers to \u201cLegion of Boom,\u201d Seattle&#8217;s nickname for its defense.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the record, Sherman is inarguably considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL today.\u00a0 But the message the Intramuralist has for Sherman \u2014 and it\u2019s the same message I attempt to remember myself, teaching my kids as well \u2014 is to act like you\u2019ve been there before.\u00a0 When you accomplish something great \u2014 when you win a competition, an election or award, even a spot in the Super Bowl \u2014 no matter the magnitude of the accomplishment, act like you\u2019ve been there before.\u00a0 Act like you know how to win with grace and humility.\u00a0 Don\u2019t use the moment to say <i>\u201clook at me&#8230; look at who I am&#8230; look at what I\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 Use the moment wisely; use it humbly.\u00a0 Remember that humility is the more attractive, influential approach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same message I would suggest each time a politician feels need to tell us that <i>\u201cI won\u201d<\/i> the election.\u00a0 There\u2019s no need to announce one\u2019s status.\u00a0 There\u2019s no need to ostentatiously vocalize victory nor boast about being the best; that approach typically solely serves to lesson someone else.\u00a0 Using one\u2019s own ability or accomplishment to lessen someone else only lessens the accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps then the primary point is found in author Blanchard\u2019s quote, that humble people actually \u201cthink about themselves less.\u201d\u00a0 They don\u2019t have to boast or brag or announce victory because it\u2019s simply not the way they think; those words aren\u2019t routinely uttered because they aren\u2019t on the tip of their tongue; they aren\u2019t actually thinking about how wonderful or powerful they are.\u00a0 They aren\u2019t focused on self.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not focused on self.\u00a0 Perhaps a minority opinion. \u00a0Still wise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully,<\/p>\n<p>AR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cPeople with humility don\u2019t think less of themselves;
