\u201cBrothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n How could troubles be an opportunity?\u00a0 And better yet, how could they ever be considered an opportunity for joy?<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 What exactly are troubles an opportunity for?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I think of the recently deceased Chuck Colson, whose troubling stay in federal prison after his Watergate-related crimes led to the founding of Prison Fellowship, an organization that ministers to the \u2018least-of-these\u2019 masses in a radically effective way…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I think of Corrie Ten Boom, the Dutch prisoner of a Nazi concentration camp, whose barracks was invested by massive swarms of fleas, yet it was the fleas which kept the abusive guards away, allowing the prisoners to study together and thus encourage one another…<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Prisons and fleas.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Troubles and trials.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Opportunity?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Many see troubles as unjust.\u00a0 Nothing worthwhile.\u00a0 Absolutely no good.\u00a0 Dare I suggest \u2014 thus completely contradicting any concept of opportunity \u2014 we don\u2019t like troubles and trials; in fact, we labor intentionally to avoid them at all costs.\u00a0 Not only do many of us toil to minimize the trouble, when the trouble actually manifests itself, we are more likely to proclaim a seemingly \u2018last-ditch\u2019 status as opposed to wrestle with the possibility of the positive.\u00a0 We identify ourself or others as a \u201cvictim.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n … \u201cMy son didn\u2019t make the better team; the coach doesn\u2019t like him.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> [In other words:\u00a0 my son\u2019s a victim.]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n … \u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion; they always promote minorities.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 [I\u2019m a victim.]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n … \u201cAll we want to do is work, to be able to support ourselves.
