{"id":2849,"date":"2014-02-02T08:45:43","date_gmt":"2014-02-02T13:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2849"},"modified":"2014-02-02T08:45:43","modified_gmt":"2014-02-02T13:45:43","slug":"super-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2849","title":{"rendered":"super sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/heres-what-it-means-when-peyton-manning-yells-omaha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2850\" alt=\"Jacksonville Jaguars v Denver Broncos\" src=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/heres-what-it-means-when-peyton-manning-yells-omaha.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So we again come to this supposedly \u201csuper\u201d day, where there exist a few facts that make me pause a little less than admiring Peyton process plays so quickly \u2014 and Richard Sherman rant at game\u2019s end&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we compare to last year, 108.4 million of us will sit down in front of the television at some point this evening and turn on Super Bowl XLVIII.\u00a0 The Seattle Seahawks will face the Denver Broncos.\u00a0 We will watch.\u00a0 We will enjoy.\u00a0 And we will eat.\u00a0 In fact, we will eat a lot&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of us will grill.\u00a0 Regardless of snow covering half the country <i>(and the 2\u201d &#8211; geepers &#8211; in Atlanta)<\/i> Super Bowl Sunday is the second biggest grilling day of the year \u2014 the first being the 4th of July.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dips and spreads are the top choice to eat today, followed by chicken wings and pizza.\u00a0 It\u2019s the busiest day of the year for pizza restaurants, with major chains selling double what they do on a regular day.\u00a0 Americans will also consume an estimated 50 million cases of beer; and we\u2019ll eat chips \u2014 an estimated 11 million pounds of them\u00a0<i> (&#8230; uh, not a ton of health food&#8230; but wait&#8230; obesity is now a \u201cdisease\u201d). \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Second only to Thanksgiving, Americans are expected to double their food consumption to 33 million pounds of snacks <i>(&#8230; did I mention that since last year\u2019s Harbaugh Bros. Bowl, the American Medical Association voted to recognize obesity as a \u201cdisease\u201d?).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the indulgence of food, how about massive amounts of money?\u00a0 &#8230; for a \u201cgame,\u201d I might add?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CBS is charging advertisers an estimated $4 million dollars per 30-second spot.\u00a0 30 seconds.\u00a0 4 million.\u00a0 That equates to approximately $133,333 per second <i>(&#8230; trying not to think about all the hungry people in the world&#8230; nor that the US national debt is increasing at a rate more than $60,000 a second \u2014 and it\u2019s unfortunately not limited to a 30-second spot!)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How about betting?\u00a0 Is the Super Bowl the number one gambling day of the year?\u00a0 Probably.\u00a0 According to \u201cBusiness Week\u201d magazine, <i>\u201cNo one knows for sure since the huge majority of the money changes hands under the table.\u201d\u00a0<\/i> But last year, sports fans bet a record $98.9 million at Nevada casinos on the Super Bowl.\u00a0 The NCAA men\u2019s basketball tournament, aka \u201cMarch Madness,\u201d recently surpassed the Super Bowl\u2019s total amount wagered,<i> <\/i>but that includes 67 games.\u00a0 So while no one truly knows, the actual figure wagered worldwide is estimated in the low <b><i>billions.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0 Gamblers place bets on everything from the length of the national anthem to who wins the coin toss.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the worldwide appeal, the game will be broadcast live in over 180 countries and territories and in more than 25 different languages.
