Every now and then there seems a cultural concept that we\u2019re subtly, societally, seemingly expected to embrace.\u00a0 It\u2019s like one of those unwritten values that we\u2019re each supposed to espouse, and if we don\u2019t, something is arguably wrong, lesser, or disturbingly \u201coff\u201d with us.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost as if when the concept is not unilaterally embraced, superiority of thought and\/or looking down on another is actually condoned \u2014 if they don\u2019t immediately latch onto that same value.<\/p>\n

For example, we now believe in diversity.<\/i>\u00a0 Diversity is good.<\/p>\n

We believe in diversity…<\/p>\n

… in the workplace…<\/p>\n

… in the classroom…<\/p>\n

… in all of academia…<\/p>\n

… in college entrance exams…<\/p>\n

… in age…<\/p>\n

… in gender…<\/p>\n

… in race…<\/p>\n

… in religion…<\/p>\n

… in the Olympics…<\/p>\n

… in sports teams…<\/p>\n

… in sexual orientation…<\/p>\n

… in attraction…<\/p>\n

… in life balance…<\/p>\n

… in leisure…<\/p>\n

… in politics…<\/p>\n

… in culture…<\/p>\n

… in medicine…<\/p>\n

… in music…<\/p>\n

… in art…<\/p>\n

… in disability…<\/p>\n

… in management styles…<\/p>\n

… in opinion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Oh, wait.\u00a0 We have trouble with that last one.\u00a0 But we believe in diversity, yes?<\/i><\/p>\n

We believe in respecting and valuing the differences of all people…<\/p>\n

… and we believe that those differences contribute to our overall good.<\/p>\n

But do we believe in the diversity of opinion?<\/i>\u00a0 … meaning, do we accept the opinion of someone who thinks differently than you and me?\u00a0 … do we then accept the opinion of the person who does not<\/i> believe in diversity?<\/i><\/p>\n

If not, then we don\u2019t truly believe in diversity either.<\/p>\n
