{"id":2933,"date":"2014-03-02T10:07:40","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T15:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2933"},"modified":"2014-03-02T10:24:57","modified_gmt":"2014-03-02T15:24:57","slug":"overreaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=2933","title":{"rendered":"overreaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/nunst004.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2934\" alt=\"nunst004\" src=\"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/nunst004.gif\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are a nation of reactors.\u00a0 No, I take that back.\u00a0 We are a nation of <b>over-reactors.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One person misuses something, so the something must be put out of use.\u00a0 Another person says something awful, so we all must omit the word.\u00a0 Still one more misuses some sort of liberty, so the government then feels the need to legislate the entire liberty.\u00a0 Why must so many liberties be legislated?\u00a0 Why does the government feel a need to restrict and control?\u00a0 Are we not capable of deciding for ourselves?\u00a0 Do we each not have the opportunity to be convicted by the same spirit of truth?\u00a0 We continue to overreact&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the \u201920\u2019s people drank too much, so we outlawed alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u201940\u2019s Japan attacked us, so we interned the Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>Still today&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A person utilizes patriotic symbols for slander, so a court bars wearing the American flag to school.<\/p>\n<p>Another says he\u2019s offended by his peer\u2019s mention of Jesus, so all public prayer is banned.<\/p>\n<p>At an Idaho high school, the cheers for some kids were more than others and some of the cheers were rude, so the high school prohibited cheering. \u00a0<em>(I&#8217;m not kidding.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A person is offended, so we must erase any source of the offense.<\/p>\n<p>A person is rude, so we must eradicate the source of the rudeness.<\/p>\n<p>A person responds to a situation foolishly, so we must diminish any possibility of the situation occurring again.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we are a nation of <i>over-reactors.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like many of you, I watched closely as the events in Arizona unfolded last week.\u00a0 We watched them wrestle with Arizona S.B. 1062.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was hard.\u00a0 Cycling through emotional, rhetorical circles, on all sides of the issue, people became understandably passionate.\u00a0 And instead of debating any actual wisdom or waste in the legislation, the discussion evolved into a debate of \u201creligious freedom\u201d vs. \u201cgay rights.\u201d\u00a0 Freedom vs. Discrimination&#8230;. a \u201close\/lose situation,\u201d if you ask me.\u00a0 Aspects of each of those perspectives seemed true; other aspects were not.\u00a0 The hype on both sides became bigger than the bill itself, skewing public perspective.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arizona S.B. 1062 amended an existing state law, giving individuals and\/or legal entities an exemption from any state law if it substantially burdened their exercise of religion.\u00a0 I\u2019m not quite sure why some felt such a law was necessary.\u00a0 The First Amendment gives each of us the right to the free exercise of religion.<\/p>\n<p>My sense is such was an <i>over-reaction<\/i> to situations that manifested themselves in Colorado and Oregon last year, where a judge in each state ordered a respective bakery to provide their services for a gay wedding, even though each baker was uncomfortable being a part of a ceremony which they believed was inappropriate due to their faith.\u00a0 In a capitalist democracy, business entities have the right to choose with whom they will work.\u00a0 Such happens daily, routinely, and without offense.\u00a0 With multiple other bakeries available \u2014 bakers who would welcome and appreciate participating in <i>any<\/i> special ceremony \u2014 I also believe the judge and plaintiff <i>over-reacted.<\/i>\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean to be disrespectful, friends.\u00a0 I simply believe we need to respect and honor all people \u2014 from those who wish to marry and those who wish not to partake.\u00a0 We each have the opportunity to be convicted by the same spirit of truth.<\/p>\n<p>Amid then the backdrop of massive, polarized publicity, late last week Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the controversial law.\u00a0 From the Intramuralist&#8217;s perspective, her decision was appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder who will say what next, though.\u00a0 Someone. \u00a0Somewhere&#8230; as we are a nation of <em>over-reactors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully,<\/p>\n<p>AR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; We are a nation of reactors.\u00a0 No, I take that back.\u00a0 We are a nation of over-reactors.
