<\/a>When pondering the point of today\u2019s post, I couldn\u2019t help but feel for the families of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.\u00a0 For 239 people to be gone… instantly… to have no idea what happened or where they are… to be completely unaware… there are few things more significant to focus on this day.\u00a0 Then it donned on me what\u2019s so troubling… and where so much of our discomfort currently, often lies.<\/p>\nIn the modern \u201cI Era\u201d \u2014 meaning, the age of all things \u201cI\u201d<\/b> \u2014 the internet, iPhones, and an abundant focus on self \u2014 we take pride in knowing everything.\u00a0 Everything.<\/i><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t know the answer, Google it.<\/i><\/p>\n
<\/i>If you can\u2019t figure something out, look it up.<\/i><\/p>\n
If you want to know what someone or something looks like, find their pic; it will be on the worldwide web somewhere.<\/i><\/p>\n
In other words, we never have to go without knowing.\u00a0 We think and feel like we know \u2014 and <\/i>can<\/i><\/b> know<\/i> \u2014 it all.<\/p>\n
But we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
I paused last week coming across a brief nugget of truth, buried within a traditional passage read at many marriage ceremonies.\u00a0 Embedded within the concept of what love is and what it\u2019s not, is this tiny little line that speaks of human knowledge, ability, and also, limitation.\u00a0 It reads:\u00a0 \u201cWhen the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
It goes on to say:\u00a0 \u201cWhen I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.\u00a0 When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. \u00a0For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.\u00a0 Now I know in part; then I shall know fully…\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
My point is that even as we grow, we still only \u201cknow in part.\u201d\u00a0 We don\u2019t know it all.\u00a0 And yet when mysteries linger \u2014 such as the intriguing whereabouts of Flight MH370 \u2014 our \u201cI Era\u201d bubbles assuming we know and are capable of knowing are quickly pierced.\u00a0 We come face to face with the reality of the limitations of our knowledge.<\/p>\n
Hence, I must ask:\u00a0 where else is our knowledge limited?\u00a0 And where else do we ignorantly assume we know that of which we are incapable?<\/p>\n
… on global warming…<\/p>\n
… on cloning…<\/p>\n
… on what will happen next in the Middle East…<\/p>\n
… on motives of individuals…<\/p>\n
… on the extent certain policies impact the economy forever…<\/p>\n
… on when and why nations cease to exist…<\/p>\n
I am not attempting to be disrespectful or partisan in any way, friends.\u00a0 I am simply asking the question.\u00a0 My sense is that many are unwilling to ask the question.\u00a0 Even more so, I believe we are often unwilling to acknowledge that we don\u2019t \u2014 and can\u2019t<\/i> \u2014 know it all.\u00a0 The unknowing makes us uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
God bless the families of those aboard that fateful flight.\u00a0 May they know something more soon.<\/p>\n
