{"id":3198,"date":"2014-05-13T06:07:51","date_gmt":"2014-05-13T10:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=3198"},"modified":"2014-05-13T07:17:47","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T11:17:47","slug":"press-picking-choosing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=3198","title":{"rendered":"press picking &#038; choosing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pie1over5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3200 alignleft\" alt=\"Pie1over5\" src=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pie1over5-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Noting the populist rhetoric of income equality but not necessarily the economic prudence, allow me to highlight the Pope\u2019s message to the UN Secretary General last Friday &#8212; which, not surprisingly, some media sources promptly pounced upon.<\/p>\n<p>Had the Intramuralist simply adopted the media\u2019s rhetoric <i>(note to all:\u00a0 never simply adopt the media\u2019s rhetoric),<\/i> I would have walked away believing the following headlines&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>From Time Magazine:\u00a0 <em>\u201cPope Francis to World: \u00a0Redistribute The Wealth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>From MSNBC:\u00a0 <em>\u201cPope Francis Calls For Wealth Redistribution.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what the Pope actually said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It is true that he condemned an \u201ceconomy of exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is true that he said that we need to have \u201cfuture sustainable development goals\u201d that \u201chave a real impact on the structural causes of poverty and hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is also true that he said: \u00a0\u201cAn awareness of the dignity of each of our brothers and sisters whose life is sacred and inviolable from conception to natural death must lead us to share with complete freedom the goods which God\u2019s providence has placed in our hands.\u201d\u00a0 Pope Francis has been a consistent advocate for the less fortunate &#8212; beginning his advocacy at conception.<\/p>\n<p>Let us also then acknowledge what was omitted from the same media\u2019s actual headlines &#8212; including the conception omission &#8212; aspects omitted which may point to a veiled bias within our press&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis did not say government should embrace socialism, which equates to government mandated wealth redistribution &#8212; which by definition is a \u201cstage of development in Marxist theory,\u201d which eventually suppresses a country\u2019s citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis did not dismiss the individual responsibility for caring for the hungry, poor, and essentially \u201cleast of these,\u201d which is indisputably the biblical mandate.<\/p>\n<p>And when Pope Francis addressed sharing the \u201cgood which God\u2019s providence has placed in our hands,\u201d he spoke not only of material goods, but also of \u201cintellectual and spiritual ones.\u201d\u00a0 To focus on only the material would omit 67% of the Pope\u2019s encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>One of the aspects that absolutely amazes this semi-humble current events observer is that we quote the seemingly most popular when it appears to make us look good.\u00a0 For example, Time and MSNBC rush to quote the Pope when it looks like he\u2019s endorsing government-mandated wealth redistribution, but they oft seem to omit his perspective when it comes to government-funded abortion-inducing drugs.\u00a0 They seem to shy mightily from the Pope&#8217;s encouraged, accompanied, spiritual teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The point of this post has zero to do with wealth or drugs or our government&#8217;s role. \u00a0The point is that the press picks and chooses when and what to publicize, seemingly emphasizing their desired perspective.\u00a0 The press thus does not always accurately represent all that any have to say. \u00a0In other words, the media manipulates the news.<\/p>\n<p>As for Pope Francis\u2019s perspective, the wise pontiff does seem to emphasize an unparalleled compassion for the poor that is respectful and contagious.\u00a0 How far he presses in economic understanding and socialist priorities is a different conversation, and the press would be wise in acknowledging such.<\/p>\n<p>They would also be wise in acknowledging the Pope\u2019s stated desire to seek God first&#8230;\u00a0 something seemingly far too convenient to also omit.<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>AR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Noting the populist rhetoric of income equality but not necessarily the economic prudence, allow me to highlight the Pope\u2019s message to the UN Secretary General last Friday &#8212; which, not surprisingly, some media sources promptly pounced upon.
