{"id":42,"date":"2012-04-03T06:50:43","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T10:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=42"},"modified":"2012-04-03T06:51:26","modified_gmt":"2012-04-03T10:51:26","slug":"humility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=42","title":{"rendered":"humility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Call it question day&#8230; a few thought-filled, brief ones&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>If the Supreme Court rules that the healthcare law \u2014 and specifically, the individual mandate \u2014 is <\/em><strong><em>constitutional<\/em><\/strong><em>, will all those who have declared otherwise acknowledge that they were <\/em><em>wrong<\/em><em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If the Supreme Court rules that the healthcare law \u2014 and specifically, the individual mandate \u2014 is <\/em><strong><em>unconstitutional,<\/em><\/strong><em> will the President and all those who have declared otherwise acknowledge they were <\/em><em>wrong<\/em><em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If concrete evidence is found that George Zimmerman was <\/em><strong><em>unprovoked<\/em><\/strong><em> in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, will his vocal supporters acknowledge they were <\/em><em>wrong<\/em><em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If concrete evidence is found that Trayvon Martin did indeed physically attack George Zimmerman, will Martin\u2019s supporters acknowledge they were <\/em><em>wrong<\/em><em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh, how the arrogant grieve me.\u00a0 They pour out words, full of boasting, crushing those with whom they disagree.\u00a0 <em>When will they become wise?<\/em>\u00a0 We aren\u2019t good at admitting our wrongs.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are likely that in most <em>(if not all)<\/em> of the above, instead of humbling oneself and acknowledging potential mistakes, those on the opposing side of the proclaimed truth will do one or both of the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Attack the judge.<\/li>\n<li>Politicize the judgment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Dare we ask:\u00a0 why?\u00a0 Why is responding wisely so hard?<\/p>\n<p>In Sunday\u2019s blog identifying the prevalent motives for all those interested or involved in the Trayvon Martin investigation, the Intramuralist proposed that justice is an innate human desire.\u00a0 We desire justice.\u00a0 We seek justice.\u00a0 We believe in just consequences.\u00a0 However, we are often conflicted when someone else\u2019s judgment contradicts our own view of what exact form justice should take.<\/p>\n<p>Note that I did not argue that the need for justice was the <strong>only<\/strong> motive for those interested or involved.\u00a0 Other motives are most certainly in play&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For some, to avenge an eye for an eye&#8230; the motive to get even.<\/p>\n<p>For others, to be on camera&#8230; the motive to be noticed.<\/p>\n<p>For still more, to make political strides&#8230; on the right&#8230;. on the left.\u00a0 Both.<\/p>\n<p>For more still, to be personally satisfied&#8230; to fight for something greater than self, to find a purpose bigger than you and me, as that can be satisfying indeed.<\/p>\n<p>And for still others \u2014 again on the right, left, or somewhere in between \u2014 it is not so much about fighting for justice or injustice, but rather, about responding to a perceived prejudice.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let me act as if prejudice isn\u2019t alive and well on planet Earth.\u00a0 I would only add that there exists prejudice on all sides of the equation.\u00a0 In those who fight for&#8230; and in those who fight against.<\/p>\n<p>The only way we can react wisely to all situations when we disagree with the judgment \u2014 be that with the healthcare law, George Zimmerman, or simply any messy dispute in our daily lives \u2014 is to be humble first.<\/p>\n<p>To be humble first.\u00a0 To embrace humility.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention we aren\u2019t good at that?<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully,<\/p>\n<p>AR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Call it question day&#8230; a few thought-filled, brief ones&#8230; If the Supreme Court rules that the healthcare law \u2014 and specifically, the individual mandate \u2014 is constitutional, will all those who have declared otherwise acknowledge that they were wrong?
