What is it about people who feel tolerance only goes one way?<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s about how we should feel about Bruce Jenner, Caitlyn Jenner, same-sex marriage, religious freedom, gun control, the Confederate flag, white privilege, black oppression, immigration, activism\u2026ugh\u2026 can I simply state the obvious?\u2028\u2028 Some of you are shouting at us.<\/p>\n<p>Let me state the next most obvious \u2014 a huge point that I believe the shouters totally miss:<\/p>\n<p><em>None of the rest of us will change our minds because of your shouting. In fact, it is more likely that we will become more entrenched in our positions <strong>precisely because<\/strong> of your shouting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can shout, shout, and let it all out, but the rudeness of your shouting \u2014 the fact that you only are good at loving some people well and have little respect for those who may or may not believe differently \u2014 means the rest of us will be minimally encouraged to act and think like you.<\/p>\n<p>Let me say that again\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When you shout\u2026 when you\u2019re rude\u2026 when you\u2019re mean\u2026 when you say you don\u2019t care that you\u2019re being rude or mean \u2014 whichever side you\u2019re supposedly on \u2014 when you engage in such disrespectful articulation, very few outside your small circle of influence will want to adopt your opinion. You are doing more damage than good.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are you embracing the above Tears for Fears\u2019 mantra from 1985, you also seem to embrace the The Isley Brothers in 1959\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou know you make me wanna (Shout!)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Kick my heels up and (Shout!)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Throw my hands up and (Shout!)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Throw my head back and (Shout!)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Come on now (Shout!)\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(Shout) yeah, yeah, yeah\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(Shout) yeah, yeah, yeah\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(Shout) yeah, yeah, yeah\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While both songs share the same simple title, I\u2019m thinking our shouting friends need to re-read the lyrics from the entire Isley Brothers melody. Two-thirds of the way through the song, they share a message to our shouters. In fact, they say it 17 times before giving way to continued shouts:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA little bit softer now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes\u2026 a little bit softer now. Please.<\/p>\n<p>Do we each want us to discuss the legitimacy of our perspectives or points? Do we want to make progress? Do we want to move toward solution or peace? Or are we incapable of respectful debate?
