{"id":568,"date":"2012-07-19T06:50:44","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T10:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=568"},"modified":"2012-07-19T06:57:35","modified_gmt":"2012-07-19T10:57:35","slug":"i-see-dead-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=568","title":{"rendered":"i see dead people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Funny thing about dead people.\u00a0 They can\u2019t talk.<\/p>\n<p>Funny thing about us.\u00a0 We talk about dead people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remember the deceased can\u2019t talk nor talk back.\u00a0 They can\u2019t respond to the words we say nor the impressions we have.\u00a0 They can\u2019t affirm what\u2019s right nor correct what\u2019s wrong.\u00a0 Hence, I wonder what they\u2019d say&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thinking back over the years&#8230; what would John F. Kennedy say?\u00a0 By most historical accounts, it seems an inspiring sense of optimism evolved via JFK\u2019s leadership.\u00a0 There was something contagious in how this charismatic, young politician spoke&#8230; how he dreamed&#8230; how he challenged&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;To whom much is given, much is required.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. \u00a0We all breathe the same air. \u00a0We all cherish our children&#8217;s future. \u00a0And we are all mortal.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet after only an approximate 1000 days, JFK died in his political prime.\u00a0 While for some this prompted increased reverence, romanticism, and historical rewrites, there\u2019s much the public learned after Kennedy died.\u00a0 There were reports regarding affairs with multiple women.\u00a0 There were reports of serious health ailments and prescribed drug usage for those problems.\u00a0 There were questions as to how the medications impacted his infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wonder what Kennedy would say.\u00a0 What was intentional?\u00a0 What did his wife know?\u00a0 <em>What would you tell us if you could speak?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More recently, what would Joe Paterno say?\u00a0 Among the NCAA\u2019s winningest football coaches, Paterno led Penn State and contributed significantly to academic life, donating over $4 million to the State College campus.\u00a0 There was something unique in how this career coach spoke&#8230; how he motivated&#8230; how he challenged&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>&#8220;Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won&#8217;t taste good.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Losing a game is heartbreaking. Losing your sense of excellence or worth is a tragedy.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard for me to explain. I don&#8217;t have an ego. I&#8217;m going to work to give these kids a chance to win. If we win, it&#8217;s theirs.\u201c<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet after 46 years as the Nittany Lion coach, Paterno\u2019s former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, was arrested on 40 counts of child sexual abuse over a 15 year span.\u00a0 While Paterno passed away this past January, investigations continued at Penn State.\u00a0 There are now reports of conspiracy and cover up.\u00a0 There are questions as to what the coaching staff and administration knew.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wonder what Paterno would say.\u00a0 What did he know?\u00a0 What other motivations were relevant?\u00a0 <em>What would you tell us if you could speak?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, 3 days ago, Steven M. Covey died.\u00a0 Covey wrote the <em>The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.\u00a0 <\/em>Unlike JFK and Joe Paterno, there is no residual scandal; hence, I think I know what he would tell us if he could speak&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be Proactive.<\/strong>\u00a0 Take initiative in life by realizing that your decisions are the primary determining factor for effectiveness in your life. Take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Begin with the End in Mind.<\/strong>\u00a0 Self-discover and clarify your deeply important character values and life goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Put First Things First.<\/strong>\u00a0 Prioritize, plan, and execute your week&#8217;s tasks based on importance rather than urgency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think Win-Win.\u00a0<\/strong> Genuinely strive for mutually beneficial solutions or agreements in your relationships.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood.<\/strong>\u00a0 Use empathic listening to be genuinely influenced by a person, which compels them to reciprocate the listening and take an open mind to being influenced by you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Synergize.<\/strong>\u00a0 Combine the strengths of people through positive teamwork, so as to achieve goals no one person could have done alone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharpen the Saw.<\/strong>\u00a0 Balance and renew your resources, energy, and health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like #5 best. \u00a0We could all work to understand a little more&#8230; \u00a0especially understanding dead people&#8230; especially not assuming we know all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully,<\/p>\n<p>AR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Funny thing about dead people.\u00a0 They can\u2019t talk.
