\"1JyANL0DTguQcnvDRTg1_DSC_1962\"<\/a>Sixteen years ago, many of us were rocked by a shocking incident. The innocent lives of twelve teens and one teacher were claimed instantaneously. Awful. Twenty-four additional others were injured in the attack. The two responsible then committed suicide.<\/p>\n

Two teen boys\u2026 killed themselves.<\/p>\n

At first, there was shock. Then there was outrage.<\/p>\n

On April 20, 1999, senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold committed the sadly infamous, Columbine High School massacre. Last week, for the first time \u2014 yes, sixteen years later \u2014 Sue Klebold spoke out.<\/p>\n

Sue is the mother of Dylan. She spoke with ABC\u2019s Diane Sawyer\u2026<\/p>\n

Like many parents, Sue Klebold was certain she would have known if something were wrong with her son. Allow me to say that again: she was certain that she would know.<\/p>\n

But she did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore Columbine happened, I would have been one of those parents. I think we like to believe that our love and our understanding is protective, and that \u2018if anything were wrong with my kids, I would know,\u2019 but I didn\u2019t know, and I wasn\u2019t able to stop him from hurting other people. I wasn\u2019t able to stop his hurting himself and it\u2019s very hard to live with that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t that the reality?<\/p>\n

We think we know when something\u2019s wrong and when it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

But we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Said Klebold\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI want people to be aware that things can seem awfully right when things are terribly, terribly wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

What she wants to say to Columbine survivors and victims\u2019 families\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one thing, of course, that I want to say is I am so sorry for what my son did, yet I know that just saying \u2018I\u2019m sorry\u2019 is such an inadequate response to all this suffering. There is never a day that goes by where I don\u2019t think of the people that Dylan harmed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Diane Sawyer emphasized, \u201cYou use the word \u2018harmed.\u2019 \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n

To which Klebold continued, \u201cI think it\u2019s easier for me to say harmed than killed. And it\u2019s still hard for me after all this time… it is very hard to live with the fact that someone you loved and raised has brutally killed people in such a horrific way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Truth told, I\u2019m not sure what the bottom line message is here today. I think the point is that it\u2019s easier for us to cast\u00a0fingers and stones when someone does us wrong. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris did us obvious, awful, heinous wrong.<\/p>\n

But is that the only angle there is, to process what happened sixteen years ago? Is that the only perspective?<\/p>\n

What helps us work it through even now?<\/p>\n

What empathy is necessary for others involved? Is any empathy appropriate? Is it inappropriate?<\/p>\n

Great questions. Wish I knew all the answers.<\/p>\n

Just thankful we\u2019re humble enough to ask and attempt<\/em> to answer the questions.<\/p>\n
