In this world in which frontrunners tend to dominate the news flow, one non-frontrunner stands out to me. It\u2019s not one that I can vote for; if I could, I would. But there\u2019s something about not being the frontrunner \u2014 and arguably, possibly never expecting to be there \u2014 that\u2019s attractive. It\u2019s humbling and sweet, precious and dear. Watching them, you just know they aren\u2019t taking anything for granted. They\u2019re not sitting there thinking any of the below:<\/p>\n
\u201cI was born for this.\u201d<\/em> There is an arrogance that permeates all of the above, it seems… a very unattractive arrogance, I would suggest.<\/p>\n But yes\u2026 this one\u2026 this is one I can get totally, wholeheartedly behind.<\/p>\n This one isn\u2019t talking so much about self. I speak of one\u2026<\/p>\n \u2026 one who perhaps never expected to be here. Something about that is refreshing this primary day.<\/p>\n On Saturday, with time running out and no polling data predicting a victory, the playing field looked even at best. Top-seeded New Mexico State was facing the California State Bakersfield Roadrunners in the Western Athletic Conference tournament final. It\u2019s not the most formidable, talked-about conference or<\/strong><\/em> primary. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n And Bakersfield\u2026 well, in the history of CSU Bakersfield, they have never before even qualified for the NCAA Men\u2019s Division I Basketball Tournament. The small school has a little over eight thousand enrolled.<\/p>\n The game was tied in the closing seconds, and while it had been a battle, Bakersfield had never led. And then, in an instant, with less than a second remaining, Roadrunners guard\u00a0Dedrick Basile \u201cgot his team dancing \u2014 both figuratively and literally,\u201d as said by Bleacher Report \u2014 by shockingly draining a three point shot, right before the buzzer\u2026 for their first and only lead of the game.<\/p>\n The Roadrunners win!<\/p>\n Said Basile thereafter, \u201cIt\u2019s one of the greatest feelings in the world right here. I mean, this is what I\u2019ve always dreamed of.\u201d<\/p>\n How good and pure and right and fun\u2026 How seemingly humble.<\/p>\n Way to go, Bakersfield! May you do well in the days ahead\u2026 may your attitude remain as contagiously sweet, regardless of outcome. \nThis one isn\u2019t demonizing any opponent.
\nThis one isn\u2019t making promises he\/she can\u2019t keep.
\nThis one isn\u2019t advancing ideas that are economically unsound.
\nThis one doesn\u2019t just look good because he\/she is being compared to another who looks a little wacko.
\nAnd this one doesn\u2019t feel like they\u2019re taking the opportunity\u00a0for granted\u2026 like they should have been in this position long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away (…although some of us may wish they were in a galaxy fairly far away…).<\/em><\/p>\n
