Years ago I was introduced to a great book by Dr. Marilee Adams, an adjunct professor at American University\u2019s School of Public Affairs, with the same title as listed above. Adams specializes in consulting, coaching, and leadership training. She has created and promoted the concept of \u201cquestion thinking.\u201d It\u2019s based on the premise that everything starts with a question and that question then bridges the gap to increased comprehension, healthier communication, and more effective results.<\/p>\n

Think about that; everything starts with a question; in fact, when I wake up, I typically ask myself a series of unspoken questions, such as\u2026 \u201cWhat\u2019s on my agenda?\u2026 How warm is it outside? \u2026 Is it raining?\u201d\u2026 or \u201cIs my favorite outfit clean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Those questions then affect the entire day ahead; they transcend how we interact with other people. In order to clearly comprehend and both adequately and accurately understand what\u2019s going on in life, we have to ask and answer questions. Note: asking and answering questions is more vital and intimate than simply spewing an opinion; spewing opinion typically stems from an incomplete perspective. In other words, as Dr. Adams says, \u201cYou can\u2019t get the best answers unless you answer the best questions first.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I then took a brief scan of the weekend headlines from the most popular internet news sites. After dismissing those centered on cleaning my kidneys, Ted Cruz\u2019s VP ploy, and the latest developments in the NBA playoffs, the following 20 questions caught my eye:<\/p>\n

(1) Can Corporate Leaders Be Good Citizens?
\n(2) Can Songs Help You Learn Scientific Concepts?
\n(3) How did Prince die?
\n(4) The 9\/11 Truth?
\n(5) Could Texas Become the Next Trans Bathroom Battleground?
\n(6) \u2019Dumbest pick’ in NFL draft history?
\n(7) What is May Day, anyway?
\n(8) Why Are Blacks Leaving Liberal Cities?
\n(9) Is Sara Ramirez Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?
\n(10) Is U.S. Ready for Post-Middle-Class Politics?
\n(11) Did Larry Wilmore go too far with N-word joke at Obama’s last #WHCD?
\n(12) Will the Paris Climate Agreement Deliver?
\n(13) Beyonce: Making Marriage Work?
\n(14) Is The Party Warming To Trump?
\n(15) Why Do Progressives Cling to Hillary?

I must go back, no less, to one of Dr. Adams\u2019 core principles. That is, again: \u201cYou can\u2019t get the best answers unless you answer the best questions first.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

With all the difficulty and tension in discussing tough topics (especially on social media),<\/em> I wonder first if we\u2019re being intentional in asking questions.<\/p>\n

I wonder second if we\u2019re asking the best<\/strong><\/em> questions \u2014 questions that prompt insight, perspective, and honest, heartfelt exchange \u2014 questions that lead to sharpening and growth.<\/p>\n

And I wonder third if we\u2019re pausing long enough to actually listen to the answers.<\/p>\n

I remember a lesson\u00a0taught to each of my budding young sons\u2026 Listening does not simply mean hearing what another says; listening means hearing and<\/strong><\/em> thoughtfully considering all that was said.<\/p>\n

May we learn to ask good questions (\u2026 and\u2026 to hopefully never experience any sort of \u201cwardrobe whoopsie\u201d).<\/em><\/p>\n
