\nEngineer, astronaut, author, executive, critic, cook, customer service rep\u2026
\nActor, actress, flight attendant, and fireman\u2026
\nDirector, producer, priest, pastor, and salesman\u2026
\nMediator, negotiator, appliance repairman\u2026 spy, or a cool-as-a-cucumber secret agent\u2026
\nNanny, neighbor\u2026 teacher, student\u2026
\nClient, patient, donor, doctor, even a volunteer.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t count the more intangible\u2026
\nBridge-builder, helper, \u201cthe glue that holds it all together\u201d\u2026
\nPatriarch, matriarch\u2026 Leader.
\nFollower, believer\u2026
\nRebel, resistor\u2026
\nAntagonist, protagonist\u2026
\nHeroine, hero\u2026
\nRookie, veteran, pessimist, optimist, realist, and more.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget our loyalties\u2026
\nCubs\u2019 fan, Broncos\u2019 fan, Duke Crazy, college basketball enthusiast\u2026<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s a whole slew of those names\u2026
\nBoilermakers and Bulldogs, Hilltoppers and Hurricanes (even Golden ones),<\/em> not to mention the Ragin\u2019 Cajuns and Green Wave.<\/p>\n

We have our socio-political names\u2026
\nDemocrat, Republican, Libertarian\u2026 Conservative, Progressive, Socialist\u2026
\nFeminist, capitalist, activist, and even the Polish Beer Lover in Poland (I kid you not).<\/em><\/p>\n

And names identified via age\u2026
\nThe elderly, millennial, and Gen-Xer\u2026<\/p>\n

Or by our location\u2026
\nFloridian, Californian, New Yorker.<\/p>\n

Even the insults offer a name\u2026
\nBully, brute, villain, and bad guys.<\/p>\n

We go by a lot of names.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the bottom line. We can\u2019t be identified solely by one.<\/p>\n

Current culture seems to encourage a singular identity, i.e. \u201cThey\u2019re just a ________!\u201d<\/em> Fill in the blank. Usually it ends with some kind of \u201c-ist\u201d or some kind of \u201c-phobe.\u201d And then that \u201c-ist\u201d or \u201c-phobe\u201d is somehow supposed to adequately explain all of another\u2019s behavior or thinking, especially behavior and thinking that we don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n

The inherent problem, however, is that one kind of name or a singular identification is inaccurate; it does not \u2014 and cannot \u2014 explain all who we are, all how we behave, and all how we think. It is not enough.<\/p>\n

For the record (\u2026 and be prepared for my longest sentence ever here\u2026),<\/em> I am a Boilermaker, blogger, student, parent, child, friend, teacher, leader, Christian, coach, facilitator, female, John Grisham reader, administrator, donor, volunteer, Human Resource Director, mediator, special needs advocate, Hoosier, Buckeye, show choir nut, speaker, writer, work out enthusiast, cleaner, cook, encourager, loyal “Friends” rerun watcher, artist, piano player, pickle hater, pet owner, in addition to being a loyal fan of the Bengals, Reds, Gators, Colts, Packers, Pacers, and the WNBA\u2019s Indiana Fever. I\u2019m a fair-weather fan of many more and a zealous, unofficial member of fan clubs supporting Bon Jovi and Bruno Mars.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s in a name, therefore, I ask?<\/p>\n

A lot.<\/p>\n

But never enough.<\/p>\n
