Sometimes the most powerful messages are shared in the simplest ways, such as 51 years ago, in \u201cA Charlie Brown Christmas.\u201d\u00a0Near the animated special\u2019s end, a discouraged Charlie Brown mutters the following:<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn’t have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don’t know what Christmas is all about.<\/em><\/p>\n

[shouting in desperation]<\/p>\n

Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And then Linus van Pelt \u2014 Charlie\u2019s best friend, Lucy\u2019s younger brother, and the show\u2019s seemingly calming philosopher however insecure\u00a0\u2014 chimes right in\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lights, please.<\/em> [a spotlight shines on Linus]<\/p>\n

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not:<\/em><\/p>\n

[Linus drops his security blanket on purpose]<\/p>\n

For behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.\u2019 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’<\/em><\/p>\n

[Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]<\/p>\n

That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what it\u2019s about\u2026 peace on earth, glory to someone bigger than self, good will toward others, and a joy-filled confidence and hope that allows for the intentional dropping of all that qualifies as our security blanket.<\/p>\n

Blessings, friends. For all those celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or neither this day, the Intramuralist wishes you peace, hope, harmony, and joy. Always.<\/p>\n
