\nHer Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece was the first novel I ever loved.
\nHis brilliance on the High Court was striking, as noted by one of his besties, the ideologically opposite Ginsberg.
\nShe was simply the best at what she did \u2014 that is, before Geno\u2019s Huskies.
\nAnd then there were those three who made me sing \u2014 from \u201cFreedom\u201d to \u201cDesperado\u201d \u2014 to even luring me repeatedly to the dance floor with \u201cLittle Red Corvette\u201d and more.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t alone\u2026 David Bowie\u2026 Fidel Castro\u2026 Leonard Cohen\u2026 Patty Duke\u2026 Zsa Zsa Gabor\u2026 John Glenn\u2026 Merle Haggard\u2026 Henry Heimlich\u2026 Florence Henderson\u2026 Gordie Howe\u2026 Gwen Ifill\u2026 Arnold Palmer\u2026 Shimon Peres\u2026 Nancy Reagan\u2026 Janet Reno\u2026 Morley Safer\u2026 Craig Sager\u2026 Phyllis Schlafly\u2026 Alan Thicke\u2026 Abe Vigoda\u2026 Elie Wiesel\u2026 Gene Wilder\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026 and more.<\/p>\n

It makes me ponder two questions\u2026<\/p>\n

One\u2026 what will we say about them?<\/p>\n

\u2026 that they performed well? \u2026 that they had a great hit? \u2026 that they led or acted or won or lost or ruled or governed or did something really outstanding, notable, awful, or good?<\/p>\n

In other words, will we speak of what they did?<\/em> \u2026 or\u2026 about who they are?<\/em><\/p>\n

Which leads, therefore, to my second question\u2026<\/p>\n

What will we want them one day to say about us?<\/p>\n

Will we want people to talk about what we did?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2026 or\u2026<\/p>\n

Will we want them to note our character? \u2026 who we are?<\/em><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s honor Fisher and Frey and Haggard and Heimlich, etal. by talking less about what they did\u2026 and more about who they are.<\/p>\n
