{"id":7094,"date":"2017-01-24T06:39:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T11:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=7094"},"modified":"2017-01-24T06:43:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T11:43:09","slug":"what-ive-learned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=7094","title":{"rendered":"what I&#8217;ve learned&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/rmhsymxupw0-jj-thompson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7095\" src=\"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/rmhsymxupw0-jj-thompson-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"rmhsymxupw0-jj-thompson\" width=\"654\" height=\"436\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the notion that everything we needed to learn could somehow be done in kindergarten, I\u2019ve learned a few new things in recent weeks\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that words matter\u2026<br \/>\n<em>(\u2026 shoot\u2026 I <strong>did<\/strong> learn that in kindergarten&#8230;\u00a0but&#8230;\u00a0I\u2019ve learned that not everyone did\u00a0learn\u00a0it there\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that people care about our country\u2026<br \/>\nGranted, the masses express their care differently, but difference is not an accurate indicator of sincerity.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that we\u2019ve got some tough stuff to handle in this country&#8230;<br \/>\nThe reality is we\u2019ve had some tough stuff for a while, but certain instances and events often bring specific issues to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that pomp and circumstance always has the potential for goosebump giving\u2026<br \/>\nThat helps if we respect the office, even when challenged to respect a person.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that politics is still in play for too many people&#8230;<br \/>\nOf course, they creatively cover it up and try to sell us on a far better-sounding motive.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that passionate opinion \u2014 even when I don\u2019t understand it \u2014 is to be respected&#8230;<br \/>\nThis is not always easy, as understanding the opinion of another typically takes significant work.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that work is worth it&#8230;<br \/>\nTrue, sometimes we\u2019re too tired, exhausted, or even unwilling; it\u2019s still worth it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that social media doesn\u2019t equate to conversation\u2026<br \/>\n<em>(\u2026 oh, wait\u2026 I learned that before, too\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that social media often does more harm than good\u2026<br \/>\nWhile it\u2019s great to keep connected, too often we feel justified in forgoing connection.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that people are more important than things\u2026<br \/>\nThat means that building relationships will always mean more than building opinion.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that too many times, I justify stating first how I feel rather than being intentional in asking another\u2026<br \/>\n\u201cChange Your Questions Change Your Life\u201d\u2026 great read, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that it\u2019s ok to cheer for patriots\u2026<br \/>\n<em>(\u2026 and Falcons, Packers, and Steelers, no less\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that a clear majority seem to crave hope and change\u2026<br \/>\nGranted, what we hope will change is different for different people.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that many\u00a0people, groups, and adults often feel looked down upon\u2026<br \/>\nUnfortunately, we can be pretty selective as to which groups we\u2019ll support and which ones we won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that empathy is often inconsistent&#8230;<br \/>\n<em>(\u2026 going back to being selective as to which groups we\u2019ll support\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned that hate speech is still alive on planet Earth.<br \/>\nBut true, people have different perspectives and justifications as to what is\/is not\u00a0\u201chate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve learned it\u2019s thus easy to be judgmental \u2014 even among the intelligent.<br \/>\nSometimes I don\u2019t know what I don\u2019t know;
