I\u2019m mad as hell and I\u2019m not going to going to take it any more!<\/em><\/p>\n

With all due respect to Howard Beale \u2014 the fictional longtime anchor of the Union Broadcasting System’s UBS Evening News \u2014 and his infamous \u201cmad as hell\u201d movie quote from 1976, my sense is we\u2019re hearing a lot these days of what many will no longer do\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026 what they won\u2019t do\u2026 what they refuse to do\u2026 and what they think everyone else should do, too\u2026<\/p>\n

I get it. There is a time to stand up, and a time to set boundaries; boundaries are healthy. And we each are entitled to discern when, where, and how to set those boundaries. The challenge is when we feel justified in setting everyone else\u2019s boundaries, too.<\/p>\n

Such is playing itself out within the social experiment still taking place on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. The vitriol\u2026 the digression of respectful conversation\u2026 it continues to seemingly only digress because we keep attempting to set another\u2019s boundaries!<\/p>\n

We confront people for what they say\u2026 How dare you? How could you even think like that? You must be stupid or ignorant or not a real whatever-you-claim-to-be?!<\/em><\/p>\n

We confront people for what they do not say\u2026 I will assume by your silence that you don\u2019t care\u2026 that you\u2019re not bothered\u2026 and that you totally agree with everything I do not.<\/em><\/p>\n

Or we\u2019re profane.<\/p>\n

Or we\u2019re insulting.<\/p>\n

Or\u2026 we justify that, too.<\/p>\n

Geeeeeesh. We are a rough crowd.<\/p>\n

Again, there exists a place to stand up and speak out. Let me not suggest that we are to be entirely diminutive, meek people. We are not.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s one element of the current vitriol that keeps popping up to me. I can\u2019t quite shake it.<\/p>\n

Read through the 5 quotes listed above again\u2026 starting with \u201cI\u2019m tired\u201d\u2026 \u201cI\u2019m done\u201d\u2026 \u201cI refuse\u201d\u2026 \u201cI will not\u201d\u2026 and \u201cI\u2019m mad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notice the subject of each of the above?<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

Yes, that\u2019s right\u2026 me.<\/p>\n

The question I can\u2019t shake this day \u2014 and must first and foremost evaluate my own falling prey in the process \u2014 is how much of \u201cme\u201d is included in our rants? Let me say this again… I am just as guilty; it’s an easy trap for each of us to fall into. How much of our rants\u00a0is about “me”?<\/p>\n

How much of \u201cme\u201d being tired, \u201cme\u201d being done, \u201cme\u201d refusing, being mad, etc. is the motivation for my desire to decide what everyone else needs to do, too?<\/p>\n

Sometimes I think if we each had more patience\u2026 each were more humble\u2026 each were more gracious\u2026 then our communication would be better, developing solution would be more probable, and our relationships would remain intact\u2026<\/p>\n
