One of my favorite fairy tales is \u201cThe Emperor\u2019s New Clothes.\u201d You remember, I\u2019m sure\u2026<\/p>\n
\u2026 the vain, egotistical emperor who is duped by a traveling salesman to buy this fabulous fabric for some new apparel\u2026 fabulous for its color, its feel, oh yes, but even more so because the fabric can only be seen by those who are wise. It would remain invisible to all those who were too ignorant to see it.<\/p>\n
Now the salesman, knowing the character of the king\u2026 his pride, his conceit\u2026 his vanity\u2026 knew he would make the sale and that the emperor would wear his new clothes in all his assumed dignity and love of showmanship. After all, how could he admit that he could not see the fabric\u2026 to admit to himself, to the salesman, to any others that this was a hoax?<\/p>\n
So indeed, he purchased the fabric and ordered his seamstress to make his lavish garment. And then to herald his first appearance in his new garb, he ordered a parade for all to \u201csee\u201d him in his new finery.<\/p>\n
Of course, all the subjects came to see the strutting emperor. Imagine their reaction. What a sight to behold! But all remained silent. Why, who would acknowledge the fakery\u2026 to themselves, to others, to the emperor?<\/p>\n
EXCEPT\u2026 a child\u2026 an innocent child not yet contaminated by pride or the opinions of others\u2026 proclaimed loudly for all to hear\u2026\u201d WHY THE EMPEROR ISN\u2019T WEARING ANYTHING!\u201d<\/p>\n
Now I am not suggesting that we are surrounded by nude \u201cemperors.\u201d But I do wonder about all the \u201cblindness\u201d in our culture\u2026<\/p>\n
\u2026 our unwillingness to advocate for truth in the face of rampant relativism\u2026
\n\u2026 our \u201canything goes\u201d mentality\u2026
\n\u2026 our no boundaries in what is acceptable or appropriate.<\/p>\n
Who will raise a voice and say, \u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStop!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s wrong!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo more!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s called sin!\u201d?<\/p>\n
Is it only the innocent not yet tainted by our cultural climate, those not yet intimidated by a what-will-others-think mentality, those not fearful of rejection for the advocacy of truth?<\/p>\n
Where are the voices of wisdom?<\/p>\n
Where are the grown-ups who really know that the \u201cemperor\u201d really isn\u2019t wearing anything?<\/p>\n
The question for us all is, \u201cWho will speak up for truth?\u201d<\/p>\n
