{"id":8168,"date":"2017-11-20T23:51:46","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T04:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=8168"},"modified":"2017-11-21T00:00:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T05:00:21","slug":"ok-to-discriminate-against-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=8168","title":{"rendered":"ok to discriminate against one?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s juxtapose two different legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>First, as reported by the progressive advocacy news site, \u201cThink Progress,\u201d in May\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt last, Jane Meyer gets to celebrate a victory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The former senior associate athletic director at the University of Iowa sued the university for gender and sexual orientation discrimination, whistleblower violations, and unequal pay. On Thursday, she was awarded $1.43 million in damages from a Polk County jury\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Meyer began working at Iowa in 2001, when she was hired by then-athletics director Bob Bowlsby as the senior women\u2019s administrator. She was the second-in-command in that department, and Bowlsby gave her excellent performance reviews and indications that she would be able to run her own athletic department some day. But everything changed when Bowlsby left the school in 2006 and Gary Barta became athletics director\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At the end of 2014, Meyer gave Barta a memo outlining the gender discrimination she had witnessed and experienced in the department. The following day she was reassigned to another program at the university, away from the athletics community she loved.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Second, as reported by the conservative commentary, Stream.org, a little over a month ago\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFormer college basketball star Camille LeNoir was hired to be a college assistant coach. However, the offer was rescinded when the school found out from an old YouTube video that she was no longer gay. Not only did she no longer identify as gay, she said it was a sin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>LeNoir\u2019s former coach at New Mexico State University, Mark Trakh, offered her a job as an assistant basketball coach. But just two days before she was to leave for New Mexico, he called her to rescind the offer. Trakh informed her that he\u2019d watched a 2011 YouTube video where LeNoir talked about basketball, sexuality and faith.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For most of her collegiate career, LeNoir was in a relationship with women. After college, LeNoir played basketball in Greece, where she was the top Point Guard of the league. It was during her time in Greece that she felt convicted to leave homosexuality\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trakh told LeNoir to pull the video or she\u2019d never work in the industry. \u2018I felt the job was taken away because of my heterosexuality,\u2019 she said. She\u2019s now suing New Mexico State in a U.S. District Court. She said she was discriminated against because of her religious beliefs and sexuality. New Mexico State claims in court documents that LeNoir\u2019s statements on homosexuality in the film would \u2018have had an adverse impact\u2019 on her \u2018ability to effectively coach and recruit players who identify as LGBT\u2019\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018I never had a chance to talk to anyone, to share,\u2019 LeNoir told The Washington Post. \u2018It\u2019s like they took this video and the fact that I\u2019m heterosexual now and made decisions without getting to know the Camille six years later.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018I believe it was an injustice,\u2019 said Camille. \u2018A huge injustice.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So two women feel discriminated against\u2026<\/p>\n<p>One because she is gay.<br \/>\nAnd one because she is not.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the accusations are true <em>(which has yet to be determined in the latter case),<\/em> allow me a brief series of sincere questions:<\/p>\n<p>Is discrimination ever ok?<\/p>\n<p>Why would we be sensitive to only <em>some<\/em> injustice? Why would we be sensitive to only one of the above?<\/p>\n<p>And, in our sincere efforts to love and respect some, why do we sometimes justify the victimization of someone else?<\/p>\n<p>Respectfully\u2026 always&#8230;<br \/>\nAR<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s juxtapose two different legal proceedings.
