\u201cAt 15, I believed that the adults at MSU surrounding Larry would do the right thing if they were aware of what Larry was doing. And I was terribly wrong. And discovering that not only could I not trust my abuser, but I could not trust the people surrounding him, has been devastating,\u201d<\/em> said gymnast Rachael Denhollander.<\/p>\n

In September of 2016, public allegations were first reported against Dr. Larry Nassar, then the sports-medicine doctor for USA Gymnastics\u00a0and Michigan State. Since that September, over 140 women have come forth with reports of abuse \u2014 women that include athletes such as Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and Denhollander.<\/p>\n

Allow that number to sit for a moment\u2026 over 140 women.<\/em> Most were between 13 and 20 years old. Multiple girls were under the age of 13; one said she was six. They were children.<\/em><\/p>\n

One more number is arguably unfathomable; the first reports of abuse surfaced over 23 years ago.<\/em> The victims \u2014 now \u201csurvivors\u201d (as eloquently said by former Olympians Jamie Dantzscher and Raisman) \u2014<\/em> were asked to keep quiet\u2026 by other adult men and women.<\/p>\n

With Nassar finally on trial \u2014 and struck by the sobering extent of this atrocity \u2014 I reached out to a few highly-respected and well-educated friends\u2026 friends for whom gymnastics was, well, \u201cmy sport\u201d\u2026 \u201cmy first love,\u201d said one\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026 My emotions are a mixture of sadness, anger, and relief. I cannot say I\u2019m happy\u2026 gymnastics was a huge part of my life\u2026 working through the pain\u2026 the discipline\u2026 I got to fly through the air and land on my feet! \u2026 those years gave me my best, longest friends\u2026 but the sport now has a black mark\u2026 those people ignored it\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

He\u2019s a predator\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

He is still blaming the victims. Does he know he did wrong?<\/em><\/p>\n

After agreeing to plead guilty to ten counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, Nassar wrote a letter to the judge two months before his sentencing. In his six-page assertion, Nassar shared he was unsure if he was mentally able to handle facing comments from those he abused; he also accused the judge of of grandstanding and conducting a “media circus” during the hearing that started a week ago Tuesday. He said, too, \u201cI\u2019ve tried to avoid a trial to save the stress to this community, my family, the victims, yet look what it is happening. It is wrong.\u201d [Insert far more than a \u201cyikes\u201d here.]<\/em><\/p>\n

Yesterday Michigan judge Rosemarie Aquilina sentenced Nassar to 40 to 175 years in prison. Said Aquilina, first referencing his letter: \u201cThis letter tells me you have not yet owned what you did. You still think somehow you are right, you\u2019re a doctor, that you\u2019re entitled so you don\u2019t have to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

And more\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 40 years, just so you know and you can count it off your calendar, is 480 months. The tail end \u2014 because I need to send a message to the parole board in the event somehow God is gracious and I know he is \u2014 and you survive the 60 years in federal court first and then you start on my 40 years. You’ve gone off the page here as to what I’m doing. My page only goes to 100 years. Sir, I’m giving you 175 years, which is 2100 months. I’ve just signed your death warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

While my trusted friends don\u2019t believe any is beyond redemption \u2014 and granted, some situations are far harder than others \u2014 neither places human judgment over the miraculous works of the God of the universe; this situation is grievous\u2026<\/p>\n

This just breaks my heart.<\/em><\/p>\n

Too many knew. Too many looked the other way\u2026 they covered up.<\/em><\/p>\n

He used a situation in which girls trust the people in the room. He could not be trusted\u2026 but they didn\u2019t know\u2026 they were children.\u2028\u2028<\/em><\/p>\n

I pray this sentencing leaves a loud message to any other predator out there; your time is up\u2026 the consequences are huge.<\/em><\/p>\n

Do I feel criminal justice was served? Yes. Full justice? Not sure. I try to leave that in God\u2019s hands. He is wiser than I.<\/em><\/p>\n

I pray the voice given to these young women, as well, as the sentencing\u2026 may they learn to trust again\u2026 may this be the beginning of healing\u2026 may they fly through the air again one day, knowing they will land on their feet.<\/em><\/p>\n

May the flying and healing begin\u2026<\/p>\n
