{"id":8987,"date":"2018-09-05T07:24:43","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T11:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=8987"},"modified":"2018-09-05T07:30:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T11:30:06","slug":"how-great-it-is-was-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=8987","title":{"rendered":"how great it is\/was\/is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WOW\u2026<i> how great it is to be back\u2026 <\/i>I am eager and excited and pouncing to post as we get back in the swing of our weekly, respectful conversations.<\/p>\n<p>But WOW\u2026 <i>how great it was to feature our 10th annual Guest Writer Series\u2026 <\/i>What a privilege it was to hear varied perspective from a diverse group of people! And how awesome it was to see the hundreds of you that read or participated in this year\u2019s offering \u2014 including the many of you who privately reached out to say, <i>\u201cI can\u2019t comment, but I\u2019m reading and watching \u2014 and yes, learning from someone who thinks differently than me.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Allow me to affirm and applaud that.<\/p>\n<p>Since the origin of the Intramuralist, I have said that listening to me is not what\u2019s most important. In fact <i>(and listen closely, in case I\u2019m never again quite so humble), <\/i>sometimes what I write is wrong. Sometimes my perspective is off. And sometimes I don\u2019t even know it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But in the world in which we now live, I never wish to insulate the echo chamber. Echo chamber residents only hear the sound of their own voice\u2026 their own opinion. And maybe an opinion is wise at one time\u2026 but if it never sharpens\u2026 if it\u2019s never stretched\u2026 if it\u2019s never challenged to say, \u201cLook, there are other angles,\u201d then I think we sacrifice the greatest wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>I especially enjoyed the wisdom and other angles shared in this year\u2019s series. This group of varied gender, ethnicity, faith, and political perspective had some poignant lines that made many of us think\u2026 i.e.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWe have to allow ourselves to walk in the freedom of knowing that we are all on level ground; we are not so different from one another.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWhen five or more justices think they know better based on any reasoning whatsoever except for what the Constitution says, that is not democracy.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cFor many of us this \u2018want-need\u2019 struggle still affects our lives, especially if we are trying to follow the Biblical truths that address the acquisition of \u2018getting\u2019 and the teachings on \u2018giving.\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But what if those truths mean we would really have more, not less?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWhen others have an offense against another, is it right for the offended person to hate the perceived hater?\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cMany preach love, but discharge hate when the office holder is not in their camp. Many preach tolerance, but end relationships because of political views.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c[Trump] could not have risen to power were it not for the toxic political environment that existed before he was elected. He knows how to take advantage of uncivil discourse, but it did not start with him, and it will not go away after his presidency unless we do something about it.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cHillary hears you and is intrigued by opposing viewpoints and tries to incorporate them into solutions. Voters rarely saw this side of Hillary.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cTo say we have not seen any change to race relations would not be truthful. To say there is not still much work to do would also would not be truthful. My advice is to acknowledge and embrace the positive changes that have occurred.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe bottom line is we all play a role in each other&#8217;s lives. We have to ask ourselves how we can be a part of the solution\u2026 Can we listen without judging?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Great to ponder, no doubt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And so I return with much more to discuss\u2026 from Mollie Tibbetts to John McCain to a Bahamian grocery clerk who inadvertently taught me an eye-opening, humbling lesson\u2026 to witnessing the counter screaming encounter in the airport\u2026 to the excellent, diverse books I read\u2026 to attempting to discern where God\u2019s compassion and sovereignty meet \u2014 and how many of us are better at embracing only one of those\u2026 to voting third party and the existence of the Electoral College\u2026 to Joe Biden, Lindsay Graham, the \u201cthree amigos,\u201d and voting for the \u201cnice guys\u201d\u2026 to my young son\u2019s profound lesson on racism \u2014 and what it taught me\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I love our Guest Writer Series for so many reasons \u2014 most of all, because it is the manifestation of welcoming diverse perspective, an excellent habit for us all.
