{"id":9326,"date":"2019-01-09T07:21:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T12:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=9326"},"modified":"2019-01-09T07:33:40","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T12:33:40","slug":"compromise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intramuralist.com\/?p=9326","title":{"rendered":"compromise?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While we were focused on the meaning and merry of recent holidays and resolutions, the federal government quit working efficiently and effectively.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oh, wait\u2026 allow me to insert a total opinion here\u2026 the federal government quit working efficiently and effectively <i>years<\/i> ago.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>(These past few weeks it\u2019s just a little more, uh, obvious.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All said, I\u2019ve wrestled with a proper approach to respectfully acknowledge the state of current affairs. I\u2019ve pondered if taking one side or another is wise. The temptation, however, is quickly doused when we find multiple public statements in which those now involved once said the exact opposite thing.<\/p>\n<p>Hence in attempt to focus on something bigger, there is one aspect within that strikes me as a significant loss for our culture: we have become numb to the value of compromise.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, like the millions of one-time Steven Covey students, I, too, heeded his call to be highly effective. Highly effective people work well with the masses\u00a0\u2014 not simply a percentage-points majority. Highly effective people know Habit #4 \u2014 <i>\u201cThink Win-Win\u201d<\/i> \u2014 and habit #6 \u2014 <i>\u201cSynergize!\u201d<\/i> \u2014 each especially relevant here\u2026<\/p>\n<p>To \u201cwin-win,\u201d a person prioritizes doing what\u2019s best <strong>for<\/strong> <strong>everyone involved.<\/strong> How can everyone in the room \u201cwin,\u201d so-to-speak?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Interactions are mindful of relationship, with an earnest desire to craft mutually beneficial solutions. A \u201c\u2018win\u2019 for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had gotten their way\u201d \u2014 or one small percentage had gotten their way. It isn\u2019t about being nice nor finding some quick fix. <strong>It\u2019s about basing \u201chuman interaction and collaboration\u201d on value and respect.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSynergize!\u201d recognizes the great good of teamwork. This habit certainly challenges us in regard to working with and even honoring the differences of those around us. As the <i>\u201c12min Blog\u201d<\/i> reviews: \u201cSynergy makes you assimilate new points of view and achieve <strong>positive results by working together.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Synergy doesn\u2019t mean we all agree nor that we should even have to. Synergy instead creates \u201ca unique solution that combines the best of the parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Note that neither of the two above, highly effective habits embrace compromise. In fact, adherent to Solomon\u2019s ancient wisdom decrying the absurdity of splitting one wanted baby in two, in rare times compromise is both foolish and impossible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But my sense is that far too many have taken that too far. They perceive and promote simply the <i>prospect<\/i> of compromise as foolish and impossible. They convince themselves that they are more moral\u2026 more wise\u2026 more <i>something.<\/i> And just like that they dismiss \u2014 and disrespect \u2014 all others in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Is there room for compromise in the current federal government standoff?<\/p>\n<p><i>Of course there is.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Hence\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i>Mr. President, Congressmen\/women, Spokespeople and Leaders of both parties\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Respect us more by showing more respect for one another.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Think \u201cwin-win\u201d \u2014 not ensuring the ethically-lesser \u201cno-win-for-them.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And synergize!<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Compromise is not foolish.
